Indoor growers don’t always need to occupy a whole room into growing. Sometimes, tents as small as 2×2 would be just fine to meet your production goals.
But where should this goal be at? We mean, what 2×2 grow tent yield would bring a smile on your face?
The one word answer is- 10oz or 0.625lbs is the best 2×2 yield theoretically. Nope, we’re not aiming for a Guinness record here. Making 0.6lbs is quite possible to grow on a 2×2 grow tent if you have complete knowledge and command over the yield deciding factors.
What on earth are the “Yield Deciding Factors”?- you might ask.
Well buddy, this is what we will explain throughout the whole post today. Call it a beginner’s handbook for 2×2 grow, or a 2×2 yield master guide, it will take you through the ultimate process of earning the best small grow tent yield.

Deciding Factors of a 2×2 Grow Tent Yield
There are some primary factors that decide a 2×2 grow tent harvest. Be it best yield in 4×4 grow tent or 2×2 grow tent, it all comes down to these factors.
So, let’s have a look at the factors that play major roles in your 2×2 tent yield-
- Light Type and Light Wattage
- Plant Training Style
- Your Strain Type
Yield from 2×2 grow tent depends upon grow tent height too. To be more specific, a 2x2x4 grow tent yield and 2x2x5 grow tent yield won’t be the same. But the impact of grow tent height isn’t that much like our primary factors.
Now, let’s explore these primary deciding factors one by one.
2×2 Yield under Different Light Types
Let’s forget about all the other factors for a while. To make the explanation easier, let’s think about the impact of lights only.
Thanks to many types of research, we now have a rule of thumb regarding light power requirement for any given grow space. This rule of thumb is 30 watts of light power for 1 sq. feet area on your grow tent.
Therefore, you’ll need around 120-140 watts of light power for a 2×2 tent harvest.
But there’s a catch-
Plants tend to absorb 60% of the light produced from the bulbs. So, let’s do the calculation,
Actual Light Power Required = 130 watts (Average)
[(130 x 100)/60] = 220 watts (Rounded up)
So, you’ll need a 220 watts light source for your 2×2 grow tent. You can also use 2 lights of 120 watts. But with more lights come heat issues. So, be a bit contented.
There’s more to light setup for grow space. But we are only discussing light power and light type here.
Now, let’s discuss light types.
3 types of lights are mostly used in small grow tent harvest. These are:
- Fluorescent Lights
- HID Lights
- LED Lights
These three types have different light emissions level. Hence, by using different combos you’ll get different results in your 2×2 tent harvest.
Now, let’s find out the best light for 2×2 grow tent yield-
Yield under Fluorescent Lights
Fluorescent lights are for some reason pretty popular among growers. CFL and T5 are the two types of fluorescent lights.
In most of the grow tents, CFL lights are used. T5 lights are normally used in big spaces.
Now let’s talk about the output of CFL lights.
Light Emission: CFL lights tend to produce 1500 lumens by using 30 watts.
Yield Count: Some experiments have led us to a general yield count under CFL lights. This general yield count is- 0.25 grams of buds/watt.
So, your max yield in 2×2 tent under CFL lights will be- 55 grams or 0.12 pounds.
Yield under High-Intensity Discharge or HID Lights
In terms of yield and lumen, HIDs are more efficient than fluorescents. You can find three types of HIDs. These are – Metal Halide (MH), High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) and Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH).
You can add up reflectors or hoods to get the most out of the light energy. But this tactic has its downside too. Adding reflector hoods creates more heat. To minimize this, you have to build an airflow control.
Now let’s look at the outputs of HID lights-
Light Emission: HID lights emit around 1250 lumen for every 30 watts.
Yield Count: You can expect a yield rate of 1 gm of bud/watt by utilizing HID lights properly. So, for our 220 watts, that’s 220 gm or 0.49 pounds.
Extra Tips: Use MH lamps at vegetative stages and use HPS lights during the flowering period. This will take your yield count to the maximum.
Yield Under LED Lights
Led lights are truly a blessing to low budget growers. These lights emit a huge amount of light at a low power cost. And the best part about these lights?
These are way cooler than other lights. Therefore, you don’t have to pour a large amount into heat control.
Many have suggested using a combo of LED Lights and HPS lights. The general notion is that a LED+HPS combo will produce more sticky buds.
Now, let’s see through the outputs-
Light Emission: Led lights can give you 1250 to 2000 lumen by using 13-20 watts. So far, LED lights are the most efficient lights.
Yield Count: LEDs get slightly less yield than HPS lights. For LEDs, the yield rate is 0.5 grams/watt. So, if you use a 220-watt LED in your 2×2 grow box then you’ll get a 110-gram yield. In another system, it’ll be a 2×2 grow box yield of 0.24 pounds.
This yield would be pretty awesome considering the low cost of LED lights. But to get that you have to get some good 2×2 grow tent led lights.
2×2 Yield under Different Plant Training Styles
Do you think your plant density has an impact on total yield?
Let’s clear this up. High plant density can result in plant suffocation and some other problems. On the other hand, low plant density means poor space utilization.
And then there come plant size related problems. Bigger plants sometimes block up little plants’ share of air and light.
To prevent any kind of plant size related problem, you should properly understand the plant size guide for 2×2 grow tent.
To prevent plant density related problem, you first have to decide your growing style.
So, What’s your growing style? SOG, ScrOG, Bush, Mesh or Low-stress training?
We have prepared a perfect plant density guide for each growing style. Her it goes-
- If you’re trying SOG then you can grow from 4 to 16 plants/sq. Meter. So, in your 2×2 grow tent you can grow 5-6 plants in this style.
- If you’re up for Pruning then you can grow only 1 plant in your grow tent.
- If you’re thinking about Low-stress training, then you can grow 4 plants/sq. Meter. For a 2×2 grow tent that’s 1 plant.
- If you’re going for ScrOG, then 1 plant is enough for a 2×2 grow tent.
You must be thinking; how much can I yield in a 2×2 grow tent for each style?
Well, to answer your question we have to know your definition of most yield.
Do you want maximum total yield? If yes, then go for ScrOG. Just give it some time and it’ll give you max yield.
Do you want maximum yield per plant? If yes, then again go for ScrOG. Through this method, one plant can yield more than 16 clones.
Do you want maximum yield per kWH? If yes, then go for SOG. You’ll be able to start with more photosynthetic material. As a result, your canopy will fill faster.
Do you want maximum yield per month? If yes, then a 2×2 SOG yield will be enough. More plants mean faster canopy fill-up.
We think this explanation will be helpful to you for deciding your 2×2 grow tent setup style.
2×2 Yield for Different Strains
Strain type is another major player determining your grow tent yield. With the right strains, you can take your yield count to a whole new level.
Besides yield count, strain types also control the plant quality.
You can understand the impact of strains better with an example-
In the case of Spinach growing, it takes 29 days for Kolibri spinaches to reach maturity. On the other hand, Carmel spinaches take 25 days to reach maturity. So, there’s a clear difference in growth rate between the two strains.
Just like this, any grow plant grows differently because of different strains.
So, choose the seed with the highest growth rate and yield rate strains. You will see a noticeable change in your grow yield.
Measuring Yield
A lot of people don’t know the correct way of measuring yield.
Here’s the thing-
The actual yield weight is the weight of dried buds.
Buds usually absorb a lot of water thanks to the plant respiration process.
After collecting buds, those are dried out through a rigorous drying process.
Regardless of the strain types, wet buds lose around 70%-75% of the weight after drying.
Here all the yield measurements are given for dried buds.
Extra Tips to Max out your 2×2 Grow Tent Yield
We have gathered up some tips for you that might come in handy while growing. These are your final cards on the table for maxing out the yield count. So, let’s explore these-
Try to Avoid Soil
Hydroponics is the real deal nowadays. We prefer using hydroponics over using soil. And we have some solid reasons behind this preference. These are-
- In hydroponics, you can control the nutrient amount, unlike soil.
- It’s pretty easy to mess up soil pH and TDS.
Use the ScrOG Method
Do you know how much more you can grow by using the ScrOG method?
After using this method, you’ll be surprised to see a yield rise of 10%-20%.
Let’s give a short peek into the process-
- Top your plant leaves
- Install a screen at 12”-15” above those
- Tie your plants with the screen once those grow 4” through the screen
Eventually, a nice ‘blanket’ of tops will please your eyes.
Besides the pleasing sight, you’ll get some extra perks like-
- Almost zero wasted light
- Almost zero soft or fluffy buds
So, use the ScrOG method for better yield.
Control Air and Temperature
Even after taking care of the primary factors some growers fail to get an awesome yield.
The reason?
Lack of interest towards air and temperature control leads them to a significant yield drop.
Now you might be thinking, what to do with this temperature and air?
Well, first of all, you need to ensure a proper 2×2 grow tent ventilation. For this, you’ll need the best fan for 2×2 grow tent. That’s not all, for better ventilation, you have to install a 2×2 grow tent carbon filter.
These are for airflow control. Plants need proper airflow so that water and CO2 mix up evenly throughout the tent.
Now proper airflow cannot ensure the safety of your plants from molds. For that, you have to get a 2×2 grow tent dehumidifier.
All these settings can be installed in almost all the grow tents. It won’t matter whether you have a cheap 2×2 grow tent or not.
So, get your grow tent airflow and temperature in line.
